WHERE DOES THE WORD "ORANGUTAN" COME FROM?

The name "orangutan" came from the Malay and Indonesian words orang meaning "person" and hutan meaning "forest", "person of the forest".

WHERE CAN YOU FIND HIM?

As a result of their diet they usually live in lowland dipterocarp forest, in Borneo and Sumatra islands. They spend most of their time up in the trees.

WHAT DOES HE EAT?

They eat mostly fruit, commonly ficus fruits, which are easy to harvest and digest. They also eat leaves and even birg eggs or honey.

HOW ARE THEIR RELATIONSHIPS?

They have a solitary lifestyle. In general, they only try to make social bonds for reproduction, and also females with their offspring.

WHAT DOES HE  DURING THE NIGHT?

He sleeps, but in a very curious way. In the afternoon, Oraguntans make a kind of nest, with "pillows", "blankets" and "roofs", so when night arrives they have a confortable bed, or even during the day to have a nap. This refuge is carefully made with small branches.

WHY IS HE IN DANGER?

Since 2000 the major fact has been the conversion of huge areas of tropical forest to palm oil plantations in response to international demand. Hunting and ilegal pet trade are reasons for the decline of Orangutan's population as well.
